What IS Clinical Sexology?

Clinical sexology is a specialized field within the broader study of human sexuality that focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating sexual issues and dysfunctions.  Clinical sexologists are healthcare professionals who have undergone additional post-graduate training in sexology, such as a PhD or DHS program, to develop expertise in this area.

These professionals take a comprehensive approach to understanding and addressing sexual concerns, considering biological, psychological, sociological, anthropological, and historical factors.  They work with clients to help them understand and accept themselves as sexual beings, using an educational and nonjudgmental approach to assist individuals in meeting their sexual goals.

Clinical sexologists may come from various backgrounds, including psychology, psychotherapy, social work, medicine, nursing and other related fields. Their work can involve:

  1. Providing sex counseling and therapy

  2. Addressing psychosexual dysfunctions

  3. Offering education on sexual health and well-being

  4. Helping clients resolve conflicts related to their sexual histories

  5. Assisting with intimacy issues in relationships

The field of clinical sexology employs a bio-psycho-social approach, recognizing that sexual health and well-being are influenced by multiple factors.  This holistic perspective allows clinical sexologists to develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each client’s unique needs and circumstances.

Clinical sexologists may also specialize in specific areas, such as kink-conscious therapy, transgender care, hypnotherapy and sexuality, behavioral and substance addiction, sex offender therapy, or sexuality and disabilities therapy.  These specializations enable professionals to provide more targeted and effective care for diverse client populations.
