Sexology FAQ’s

What is a Sexologist and what do they do?

Q:  What do Clinical Sexologists (Sex Doctor) do?

Clinical Sexologists: Experts in Human Sexuality

A Clinical Sexologist with a Doctorate in Human Sexuality differs from Sex Educators and Sex Therapists in several key ways:

  • Holds an advanced Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or DHS) in Human Sexuality Studies.

  • Focuses on research, education, and counseling related to sexual, intimacy & interpersonal relationship challenges.

  • Provides comprehensive understanding of human sexuality from biological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives.

  • Focuses primarily on providing sexual education and information.

  • May work in various settings like schools, community organizations, or healthcare facilities.

  • Licensed mental health professional with specialized training in sex therapy.

  • Addresses psychological aspects of sexual issues and dysfunctions.

  • Typically holds a degree in psychology, social work, or counseling.

The unique value of a Clinical Sexologist lies in their ability to combine:

  • In-depth knowledge of human sexuality

  • Counseling skills

  • Comprehensive sex education

  • Health education

This multifaceted approach allows Clinical Sexologists to address a wide range of sexual concerns and promote overall sexual well-being. They often collaborate with other mental health professionals, such as psychotherapists or marriage and family therapists, to provide complementary expertise and ensure comprehensive care for clients

All sessions are conducted via Zoom. Upon scheduling your appointment, you will receive an email with the Zoom link and passcode.

During the session:

  • We will engage in a conversation where I will ask what brings you to see me today.

  • I will inquire about your priorities to better understand your needs, taking notes and listening for key themes.

  • Together, we will create a priority list to focus on during our time together.

  • I often assign homework or “homeplay” to reinforce our discussions and facilitate growth.

My primary goal is to help you identify areas where you feel stuck and provide tools that promote expansion, education, and personal growth.

I prioritize ensuring that each individual feels heard, seen, loved, and safe throughout the process.

Additionally, with my medical background, I may identify the need for referrals to medical doctors or suggest specific lab tests if hormone imbalances are suspected. I am also comfortable recommending medication adjustments or psychotherapy when necessary. I believe in a collaborative healthcare approach that involves teamwork for optimal support.

The frequency of sessions is entirely up to you, the client. My practice is client-centered, allowing for flexibility based on your needs and preferences.

  • : Some clients prefer to dive right in and schedule weekly sessions to maintain momentum and focus on their goals.

  • : Others may feel comfortable with just one session or choose to meet less frequently as they progress.

I also provide assignments to support your growth between sessions and offer occasional email support when needed.
